Maxime Magnon, born in Beaune, Burgundy, learned winemaking under Jean Foillard of Morgon and Philippe Pacalet. Influenced by Didier Barral of Faugères, he settled in Villeneuve-les-Corbières in the Hautes-Corbières region of Southern France in 2002. His approximately 11 hectares of vineyards, scattered across schist and clay-limestone hills around 200m above sea level, mostly consist of old bush-vine (gobelet) vines aged 60 to over 80 years. He is credited with bringing neglected Carignan, Grenache, and Cinsault varieties back into the spotlight.
'La Bégou' is his only white wine. It is made from Grenache Gris and Grenache Blanc with a small amount of Carignan Gris, direct pressed, then fermented with natural yeasts in old foudres. It is aged on its lees in used barrels for about 10 months and bottled without filtration.
In the glass, it presents a bright golden color with a matte tone reminiscent of apricot skin. On the nose, ripe yellow plum, white peach, and quince open first, followed by chamomile, fennel, savory iodine minerals, and faint almond notes from apricot kernels. On the palate, a soft and dense texture from lees aging takes center stage, while Mediterranean herbs and saline acidity penetrate the mid-palate. The finish leaves a long, lingering, clean aftertaste of wax, honey, and bitter dried orange peel.
